This is a relaxed, comfortable portrait of a highly distinguished medical man. He seems at peace with the world and enjoys being painted. The way the eye is led to the dangling spectacles, which in his relaxation he looks as if he might drop, is masterful. In fact the triangular relation between the two hands and the head forms a perfect structure to complement the softness of the academic dress. The rich red and orange convey the warmth of the occasion, and of the sitter.
